Good news for Kuala Lumpur! Sept 26 ATP World Tour 250 is on.

27 06 2009

woo hoo! i’m really pleased for my home city…

but why hold the event at Putra indoor stadium which is not purpose built for tennis when we already have the National Tennis Centre at Jalan Duta? isn’t it like holding Wimbledon at Royal Albert Hall? Upgrading the National Tennis Centre to ATP standards would be a more visionary option since we are hosting the ATP World Tour for 5 YEARS, and the upgrade can be permanently enjoyed by Malaysians for years…

Understanding the new ATP World Tour

atpbrandlogos

The 2009 ATP World Tour promises to be an exciting season of men’s tennis. Changes have been introduced to create a healthier schedule for players and to make the sport easier to follow for fans. A number of improvements have been implemented and here’s a look at some of them:

New Structure: New tiers of tournaments have been created — ATP World Tour Masters 1000, ATP World Tour 500 and ATP World Tour 250 — leading to the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London where the ATP World Tour Champion will be officially crowned. The number represents the points awarded to the winner in each respective tournament.

KL To Host ATP World Tour M’sian Open

KUALA LUMPUR, 26 June (Bernama) — Malaysia has achieved a milestone in tennis when Kuala Lumpur won the right to host the prestigious ATP World Tour 250 for a period of five years from this year until 2013.

After a highly competitive bidding process against three other cities in Asia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Friday officially announced that the inaugural Malaysian Open Kuala Lumpur would be held at the 16,000-capacity indoor Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Sept 26 till Oct 4.

hello Sabine Lisicki – the green clayer slayer of Venus.

16 04 2009

I was grinning to my Cheshire cat self on Stan Wawrinka’s win, after an enjoyable multi-tasking ‘watch-tennis-slash-tweet-tweet-tweet’ session, when Monte Carlo turned Wimbledon with the rain covers preventing Rafa from getting Lapentti in a twist.
Channel switched to rain-free Charleston, South Carolina (repeat with twang please) and the WTA Family Circle Cup. Venus vs Lisicki. Hmpffhh. Ok ten minutes max then its back to Club Med.
But I couldn’t take my eyes of green clayer Sabine Lisicki as she slayed the mighty Venus, playing ‘totally in the zone’ tennis. 6-4, 7-6. It was like watching Maria Sharapova win her first Wimbledon. Germany now has a new Graff.

Sabine Lesicki defeated Venus on the green clay of Charleston

Sabine Lisicki defeated Venus on the green clay of Charleston. And then bageled Vesnina. And outplayed Bartoli. Now in the Finals!

Link to more info on Sabine Lisicki here

Link to official Family Circle Cup site for Results

UPDATE 1 : Sabine Lisicki swept Elena Vesnina of Russia aside with a 6-4, 6-0 win. I would like to see Sabine win this tournament as I reckon she’s ready to take on the tour!  Go Sabine!

Also the player I picked to win, Vera Zvonereva, retired with an injured ankle during her 3rd round match against V. Razzano. Extremely unfortunate for Vera. Hope she recovers before Roland Garros.

Marion Bartoli of France defeated Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-4,6-1. Now we will have Marion vs Sabine!

UPDATE 2 : Sabine Lisicki outplayed Marion Bartoli in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, to set up a ‘battle of the teens’ with Caroline Wozniacki. Caroline had the tougher match having to fight off a determined Dementieva and her own nerves in 3 sets 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.

This could be the start of new final match-ups in the very near future!

UPDATE : The Scot found his way out of the fog. Andy Murray won 76(11), 64.

Sania Mirza out of Family Circle in 3 sets to Venus. Shuai Peng moves up.

16 04 2009

Sania Mirza, currently ranked 100th, dug in and took Family Circle Cup second seed Venus Williams to 3 sets in an exciting 2 and a half hour Round 2 match.
Venus Williams : “These kind of matches are great to pull out, I’ve been in these situations before, so I rely on that.”

While Williams struggled, it was a big day for fellow American Melanie Oudin, who advanced to the third round with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over No 29 Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada, seeded ninth. Oudin will face 13th-ranked Marion Bartoli of France in the next round of the $1 million Family Circle Cup.

No. 5 seed Caroline Wozniacki defeated Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-3, while Patty Schnyder, the No. 8 seed, was eliminated by Elena Vesnina 2-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5. No. 10-seeded Shuai Peng advanced with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Akgul Amanmuradova.

shh…vera zvonereva winds up champion in indian wells

23 03 2009

Quietly under cover of her towel, unsuspecting to her opponents, Vera Zvonereva has won the PNB Paribas Open at a wind-blown Indian Wells. Vera employed the same towel disguise tactic to win the Pattaya Open in Thailand in Feb. And preferring us not to recall the Australian Open, where she quietly littered some ‘bagels’ (in Malaysia we call it J&Co) on her stealth-run to the semis.

well done vera! tennis elbow room has been rooting for you since the Qatar finals against Sharapova & the bronzie Beijing Olympics, but we’ve kept it under wraps…world domination secret plan next.

psst…vera also won the doubles at indian wells with victoria azarenka

bali – tennis combo : Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions Nov 4-8, 2009

14 03 2009

Received a newsletter from a top asian tennis tournament, explaining the new format of the popular Bali tournament – Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions. I like the ‘Road to Bali’ concept involving the winners of 6 tournaments in Mexicio, USA & Europe.

Trivia : before Bali, the tournament was held in Surabaya, Indonesia for 4 years from 1994 to 1997. Then it was held in KUALA LUMPUR for 2 years in 1999 and 2000. Malaysia doesn’t seem keen on ‘owning’, branding & developing an annual repeat tournament, unlike Bali and Thailand with their Pattaya Tournament. Malaysia boleh only the big names – big time – hit & run one-off EXHIBITION matches eg Federer vs Sampras, Borg vs McEnroe.

Defeat leaves Roger Federer a broken man

by Neil Harman, Tennis Correspondent, in Melbourne

Three years ago, on the identical spot, Roger Federer wept in Rod Laver’s embrace, having won his seventh grand-slam tournament. Yesterday, as Federer broke down in uncontrollable sobs at the prize-giving, the record-equalling fourteenth title as far away as ever, Laver was standing a yard from him, not knowing what to do.

Actually, no one knew whether they should look at Federer or look away. It required Rafael Nadal to walk on to the court and throw his sturdy left arm around the Swiss to prevent any more shuffling of feet and wringing of hands. It was the Australian Open’s version of the Duchess of Kent and Jana Novotna at Wimbledon in 1993, but without the mawkishness.

Federer was unable to speak because Nadal, in winning his first Open at Melbourne Park – his first hard-court grand slam title, the one it was reckoned might forever elude him – had dashed another presumptuous theory. Having prevailed in five hours and 14 minutes on Friday night and into Saturday morning to defeat Fernando Verdasco, his compatriot, Nadal gave Federer a 24-hour head start to recover from his semi-final and had the stamina, the brutish game, the willpower and the absolute faith to wear the great Swiss down 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 in another sapping four hours and 23 minutes.

Has there been a player like this piece of Majorcan granite? Of 15 matches in which he has been forced to play the full five sets, he has won 12. Federer’s record is 13-12, which indicates a frailty in his make-up that might yet prevent him from securing the record held by Pete Sampras, the American. For as long as Nadal is around, that is. And he knows it.

Think of three recent examples: the Italian Open final of 2006, when Federer had two match points against Nadal and tossed in two astonishingly poor forehands; the matchless Wimbledon final last year when the Swiss came back from two sets down to take it into a decider and missed a forehand on match point as twilight fell; and the last, and surely the most destructive, which came yesterday as Federer collapsed, his mind frazzled and his right arm failing him as Nadal dug in and refused to countenance defeat.

Federer put a lot of it down to serving poorly and in the middle of the second set, a long way away from the finality of defeat, he missed 11 consecutive first serves. In the third set, which Nadal won by playing a near-faultless tie-break, Federer had break points – two lots of three in consecutive games. Everything was a terrible chore.

But that is what makes Nadal such a champion. Put it into his head that he cannot win – and the schedule here, with one semi-final taking place a full day before the other, is something tennis at this level ought not to tolerate – and he accepts the challenge head on. When the world No1 lost the fourth set, which he really should have won, having allowed five break points to slip through his fingers for a 3-2 lead, one assumed the momentum was with Federer. But that was never the case. At the match’s end, and although it took three match points to see Nadal home, Federer was visibly coming apart at the seams.

When he beat Juan Martin Del Potro, the sixth-best player in the world, for the loss of three games in the quarter-finals, Federer said that as the contest drew to a close, he was simply happy to put the Argentinian “out of his misery”. Five days later, and he knew how that felt. Not at all nice.

The crowd, as it always seems to be anywhere other than Spain, was firmly in the Swiss’s corner. “Everyone’s favourite player,” as he was introduced at the post-final ceremony, just before he could not hold back the tears. “Not everyone,” a lone voice responded and it must have felt to Nadal that lone voices were all he could call on.

But to look at his support team yesterday – uncle Toni, his coach, Sebastien, his father, and Rafael, his physical trainer – in the front row, was to be privy to something intriguing. Even when their boy was down, when to the rest of us he had to be playing on fumes rather than adrenalin, they could not stop smiling. We know that this is the Spanish disposition, but it was as if they knew something those outside the circle required four hours, 23 minutes to ascertain. That Nadal would be holding new silverware.

They know what makes him tick, why he is such a special individual, why he owns a 13-6 lead over Federer. Coming into this final, Nadal had won 18 sets and lost two; Federer the same. Nadal had won 123 games and lost 68; Federer’s figures were 123-67. They may have been that close statistically, but yesterday came down to one man getting inside the other’s head and turning it into mush. Hence the breakdown later.

Discussing it, Federer could barely raise his eyes from beneath the rim of the cap pulled low. “In a fifth set, anything can happen,” he said. “That’s the problem. Not usually the better player always wins. It is just a matter of momentum sometimes. Maybe I should have never been there in the first place. I played a terrible fifth set. I kind of handed it over to him.”

If one may presume to quibble with Federer, he did not so much hand it over to Nadal as it was ripped it from him – there is a difference. In the first four sets, there were ten occasions in which Nadal was 15-0 down on his own serve and won the game. As Ivan Lendl, the remarkable Czech who won eight grand-slam singles titles (Nadal now has six and surely no one will be able to stop him winning a fifth French Open in June), once said: “There are two important points in tennis, the first one and the last one.”

The last one and the final word went to the champion. He said sorry to Roger and wished him good luck for the rest of the year. He will need it.

A&P Tennis Team Invitational Kuala Lumpur : brand new prize money

19 10 2008

Tennis is on a roll in KL! A new tournament , the A&P Tennis Team Invitational was held at the National Tennis Centre in Jalan Duta on Oct 17th to 18th, 2008.

What or who is A&P? Reliable sources tell me its Andrew & Paul.

The tournament started out of love for tennis & also a spirit of competitiveness but with the idea of keeping it to the age group of the organisers & friends…

Eleven teams took part with Philippines, Indonesia & Thailand providing the Asian level  component. The doubles matches were really fast & exciting!

Kudos to the organisers; Terrence, Wilson Khoo, Souren, Wai Yaw, Marco Sitepu. With support from Tune Hotels & LTAM.

How about a mixed doubles in the team line-up guys?

What a low-key final
Yet it failed to deliver an exciting finale, leaving tennis enthusiasts to look to a more challenging year. Sadly, the same names reappear within the circle of winners, giving the national players little opportunity to display their potential.

tennis kuala lumpur : Inter Nation Ladies Doubles Team *

3 12 2007

wed 5th dec – fri 7th dec
national tennis centre, jalan duta,
kuala lumpur, malaysia

The Inter Nation Ladies Doubles Tournament has been organised for the last 15 years according to current organiser, Poh Manickam, whom I met at the Malaysian Veterans Tournament. That would make it the longest running Ladies Tennis Tournament in Malaysia! Kudos Ladies!

It started life with the Tennis Association of International Women some 15 years ago under the helm of Datin Liz Malik, Rosie Dewal & Marianne Yeo,
and later Angela Burchardt.

poh-manickam-org-internation Poh Manickam

8 teams are taking part in this year’s tournament. Each team comprises of 6 players i.e 3 doubles. The teams are Malaysia 1 & 2, MANZA/ABWM 1 & 2, Japan 1, 2 & 3 and Rest of the World. Think Davis Cup!

If the standard of the Ladies Doubles at the recent Malaysian Veterans Tournament is anything to go by, the next 3 days will see some great tennis! Come on over.

Wed Dec 5th : day 1

Got to National Tennis Centre, Jalan Duta at 1pm and all was quiet. Checked the Notice Board, saw the scores and realised the matches were over.

Thurs Dec 6th : day 2

Jenny Chan and her husband have been busy with Poh Manickam organising this year’s InterNation Ladies Doubles Tournament. The team based tennis tournament has a different atmosphere because the supporters get a bit more involved and vocal supporting their teams! Good fun!

For 2008, the tournament will be brought forward to the middle of the year. According to Jenny, the Tournament is open but you must have a country team of 7 players of 35 years and above. Please contact 012 2917620 or 012 2029609 for info.
