16 04 2009

Sania Mirza, currently ranked 100th, dug in and took Family Circle Cup second seed Venus Williams to 3 sets in an exciting 2 and a half hour Round 2 match.
Venus Williams : “These kind of matches are great to pull out, I’ve been in these situations before, so I rely on that.”

While Williams struggled, it was a big day for fellow American Melanie Oudin, who advanced to the third round with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over No 29 Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada, seeded ninth. Oudin will face 13th-ranked Marion Bartoli of France in the next round of the $1 million Family Circle Cup.

No. 5 seed Caroline Wozniacki defeated Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-3, while Patty Schnyder, the No. 8 seed, was eliminated by Elena Vesnina 2-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5. No. 10-seeded Shuai Peng advanced with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Akgul Amanmuradova.

1st Round Update : MIAMI OPEN

Mathilde Johansson of France won a 1-6, 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (10/8) 1st round match over Sania Mirza, who received a wild card in Miami. The girls played for 2 and a half hours with 19 service breaks. Johansson faces Dinara Safina in second-round. Let’s hope Dinara has shaken all that desert sand off her.

Maria Kirilenko is also through after a 3 setter against Katerina Bondarenko. Maria Kirilenko should work at winning more matches, especially with fellow Russian namesake at her crossroads now.

Sania Mirza, Bhupathi nets grand slam buzz

The two Indian wildcards rebounded from their loss in last year’s Australian Open final to beat Nathalie Dechy of France and Israel’s Andy Ram 6-3, 6-1 at Melbourne Park.

Mirza, 22, had already achieved a series of firsts for Indian women tennis players, including the highest ranking of 18, and is seen as the nation’s hope for success in the future.

She became the first Indian female to capture any grand slam title when she partnered Russia’s Alisa Kleybanova to win the 2003 Wimbledon junior doubles then in 2005 she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA event when she won at Hyderabad.
