Jawariah beginning to hit the right note

Jawariah Noordin  IT all boils down to self-belief, said national coach S. Selvarajoo who has placed his faith in top national singles player Jawariah Noordin. Jawariah has performed well in several ITF circuits abroad and it is high time for Selvarajoo to raise her level of play.

She had a rough start in the US$10,000 (RM35,000) Jakarta tournament. Despite defeating Thai lass Siriporn Phakamad 6-1, 6-1 in Round 1, the Penangite was forced to retire in the next round against host player Sandy Gumulya (3-6, 6-0, retired).

Jawariah’s fortunes changed for the better in the US$10,000 Solo tournament. She first beat China’s Yang Pang 6-2, 6-0 in the first round and later beat fourth seeded Nungnadda Wannasuk of Thailand 7-6, 6-3 in the second. Ranked world No 960, Jawariah’s winning streak came to a premature end when she lost in the quarterfinals to fifth seeded Indonesian Lavinia Tananta 6-4, 6-2.

Sania Mirza, Bhupathi nets grand slam buzz

4 02 2009

The two Indian wildcards rebounded from their loss in last year’s Australian Open final to beat Nathalie Dechy of France and Israel’s Andy Ram 6-3, 6-1 at Melbourne Park.

Mirza, 22, had already achieved a series of firsts for Indian women tennis players, including the highest ranking of 18, and is seen as the nation’s hope for success in the future.

She became the first Indian female to capture any grand slam title when she partnered Russia’s Alisa Kleybanova to win the 2003 Wimbledon junior doubles then in 2005 she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA event when she won at Hyderabad.

A&P Tennis Team Invitational Kuala Lumpur : brand new prize money

19 10 2008

Tennis is on a roll in KL! A new tournament , the A&P Tennis Team Invitational was held at the National Tennis Centre in Jalan Duta on Oct 17th to 18th, 2008.

What or who is A&P? Reliable sources tell me its Andrew & Paul.

The tournament started out of love for tennis & also a spirit of competitiveness but with the idea of keeping it to the age group of the organisers & friends…

Eleven teams took part with Philippines, Indonesia & Thailand providing the Asian level  component. The doubles matches were really fast & exciting!

Kudos to the organisers; Terrence, Wilson Khoo, Souren, Wai Yaw, Marco Sitepu. With support from Tune Hotels & LTAM.

How about a mixed doubles in the team line-up guys?
